In the second half of the year, Asia Pacific becomes a stage for cultural and sporting events that transcend the ordinary, inviting travellers to engage, celebrate, and connect.

Whether it’s the lyrical rise of full moons in Japan or the electric energy of elite sport in Tokyo, this time of year draws travellers into cultural and competitive moments that stay with them long after the flight home.

Moon Festival – Kyoto

• When: Mid-eighth lunar month, 2025

• Where: Kyoto, Japan

Each year, as part of Japan’s tsukimi (moon-viewing) tradition, Kyoto hosts one of the country’s most poetic festivals – an ode to light, reflection, and the changing season.

The Moon Festival takes place in gardens illuminated by lanterns and framed by centuries-old temples, where poetry recitations echo across courtyards and floating flower arrangements drift gently across dark ponds. In a city usually known for its calm and quiet, this night feels warm and full of heart. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, locals and travellers come together to sip sake, listen to gentle music, and enjoy tsukimi dango (sweet rice dumplings) offered to the moon and savoured under its soft glow. It’s a moment to slow down, connect, and celebrate the beauty all around you.

If your visit to Kyoto extends beyond the full moon, take time to explore the backstreets of Gion, where traditional teahouses still host geiko performances. Or head to Arashiyama for bamboo forests and riverboat rides – just a short train ride from the city centre.

World Athletics Championships – Tokyo

• When: 13–21 September 2025

• Where: Japan National Stadium, Tokyo

When Tokyo welcomes the world’s finest athletes to its National Stadium this September, the city will again prove why it’s a capital of precision, passion, and performance. The World Athletics Championships return to Tokyo for the second time, promising record-breaking moments and fierce competition in the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

With over 2,000 athletes from 200 nations, the Championships are more than a sporting event – they’re a global celebration of human capability. For Tokyoites and visitors alike, this is the chance to see the sport’s biggest stars, live and in motion.

Outside the stadium, Tokyo offers contrast at every corner. Start the morning with quiet at Meiji Shrine, lose yourself in the futurism of Shibuya’s crossing by afternoon, and by evening, book a counter seat at a Michelin-starred sushi bar or settle into a tiny izakaya for grilled skewers and cold beer. If you have more time, a quick bullet train will get you to Nikko’s waterfalls or Hakone’s onsen serenity.
