A food-fuelled 48 hours in Istanbul

Welcome to Istanbul
Istanbul, the only major metropolitan hub straddling two continents, is a city layered in history and a rich blend of two unique cultures. Influenced by centuries of trade and empire, Istanbul's culinary scene pulls from the Mediterranean, Central Asia, Arabic and Balkan flavours and traditions. Think spiced meats sizzling over open flames, sweet and flaky pastries on every corner, and mezze spreads made for long, lazy afternoons. Whether you’re grazing through lively markets or indulging in rooftop dining, there’s something for everyone, from halal-friendly fine dining to quick vegan eats and centuries-old bakeries.

Your 48-hour itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and appetite
Once in town, check into your hotel and stretch your legs in the historic Sultanahmet district. Explore the Grand Bazaar, take in the Hagia Sophia, and stop for a grilled köfte sandwich near Eminönü. Before crossing the Galata Bridge, pause at Yeni Cami, the “New Mosque”, where soaring domes, glinting tiles and the heady scent of spice hint at centuries of Ottoman splendour.
In the afternoon, make your way to Galata Tower for sweeping city views, then wander the winding streets of Karaköy. Dinner calls for rich lamb tandır or seafood meze on a rooftop terrace, with the Bosphorus glittering below.
Day 2: Breakfast and beyond
Wake up to a Turkish breakfast that’s more banquet than meal - olives, cheeses, eggs, simit, jams and tea served endlessly. Then ferry to the Asian side of the city and lose yourself in the food markets of Kadıköy. Sip on local pomegranate juice, snack on gözleme, and browse the stalls for pistachio-laced sweets to bring home.
Before heading back to the airport, grab a doner to go, the city’s most notorious street food and the perfect way to round off your culinary adventure.
