A weekend agenda of parks, neighbourhood walks and skyline views

It turns out that "The City That Never Sleeps" does occasionally take a nap, or at least rests its eyes. New York takes on a calmer energy throughout spring. Steel and glass skyscrapers stretch above lush tree-lined paths, while the constant motion of the streets is softened by its elevated walkways, ground-level eateries, quiet park loops, and open blue skies.

If you're considering a weekend escape to The Big Apple, our city guide maps out how best to navigate your New York Minute.

Friday afternoon: get the city under your feet

There's no faster way to understand New York than walking the High Line. Elevated above the streets, this linear park stretches through the West Side with a blend of greenery, architecture, and shifting views. When you drop down into Chelsea, let the afternoon drift between galleries, coffee stops, and quieter blocks.

Friday night: the West Village at sunset

Set on a short walk south from Chelsea, the West Village is the perfect setting for your first night in New York. Lined with trees and softly-lit restaurants, it's ideal for a relaxed sit-down dinner of handmade pasta or seasonal US-inspired plates, followed by a nightcap at a nearby wine bar. No hopping needed, stay in one pocket and ease into the weekend.

Saturday morning: Central Park, one section at a time

Pick a loop, not the whole park

Central Park doesn't need conquering. Enter near Bethesda Terrace, cross Bow Bridge, then follow paths that lead to open lawns and shaded corners, perfect for a picnic, relaxing and people-watching.

Step out for brunch nearby

Leave the park for brunch in a nearby neighbourhood, where brownstones line the streets and café chatter replaces traffic noise. Grab bagels, pancakes, deli classics like pastrami, or an iconic New York slice of pizza pie.

Saturday afternoon: downtown streets or Brooklyn air

Shift perspective in the afternoon. Stay in Manhattan and wander SoHo's cast-iron blocks and independent stores, or cross the river to DUMBO and walk the Brooklyn waterfront. Either way, the skyline becomes something you look at rather than stand beneath, creating a more distant, cinematic backdrop.g way.

Saturday night: take the view seriously

Spring in New York City is rooftop season. Midtown delivers the postcard view, SoHo is aesthetically pleasing, and the Meatpacking District brings a more edgy experience with views over the Hudson River. Arrive early, stay for a drink or two, and let the city stretch out beneath you.

Sunday morning: coffee, brunch, one last route

Spend the final morning in a place you've already passed through once, whether it's a neighbourhood coffeehouse, a short park walk, or a familiar street seen differently in daylight.

A few well-chosen days in New York's springtime leave you with a sense of optimism and calm that's difficult to capture in words. That feeling stays with you from check-out to the comfort of a Priority Pass experience, like the VIP ONE Lounge, to long after you arrive back home.
