No two people travel in quite the same way. Some delight in carefully planned itineraries, while others leave room for spontaneity. Some seek moments of quiet reflection, while others are drawn to experiences that challenge, inspire and leave a lasting impression.
If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers to immerse yourself rather than simply observe, you’ll know that the most memorable journeys are not measured by the places you visit, but rather by how they change you. They invite you to connect more deeply: with people, culture, nature, and yourself.
Few places embody that spirit quite like Latin America. Alive with colour, creativity and energy, it’s a region that rewards curiosity and open-mindedness. For those considering Latin America travel, September offers the added benefit of a gentler pace. Whether through cultural exchange, creative learning or a deeper connection with the natural world, Latin America offers experiences that have the potential to leave a lasting impression.

Descendants of the indigenous peoples who once formed part of the Inca Empire, many Quechua communities along the Cusco-Machu Picchu corridor continue to practise traditions that have shaped life in the Andes for centuries. Farming techniques, weaving traditions, language and ceremonies remain woven into daily life, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience a culture that continues to be lived rather than performed.
A community homestay run by Quechua families places you inside life here, rather than adjacent to it: shared meals, hands in the soil, mornings that begin with the land rather than a schedule.
Culturally integrated lodges along the Cusco-Machu Picchu corridor offer a less immersive alternative, but still allow you to experience Peruvian daily life. Discover ancient sustainable farming practices, time-honoured craft and culinary traditions, as well as special celebrations and festivals centred around dance, music and storytelling.
In southern Mexico’s Oaxaca City, there’s a sweet spot between high summer and the busy winter festival months, when travellers looking for something off the beaten track can immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of everyday life.
Capital of the eponymous state, Oaxaca City – where baroque churches give way to cobbled streets and the ancient Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán are visible from the hills above – is known for its culinary prowess and cultural celebration. Here, current and ancient ways of life blend harmoniously in an inspiring example of how we can honour the past while navigating modern life.
It’s also the ideal destination if you want to learn how to make local cuisine, like moles and tortillas, in a hands-on classroom setting. And with a strong indigenous-led, craft-based industry – from wood carving and weaving to ceramics – you won’t find better artisans to learn from. Keep exploring beyond the kitchen with Destination Deals, offering more ways to experience Mexico like a local.

In September, the rain arrives in long, warm curtains across Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, bringing with it one of the region’s most remarkable natural spectacles. Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests in peak numbers, making their way across the dark sand towards the water in a procession that’s a privilege to witness.
At this time of year, conservationists allow outside volunteers to assist them. You can get involved in beach patrols, nest monitoring and wildlife surveys alongside working marine biologists, who help ensure you’re following all the right protocols.
Echoing Costa Rica’s celebrated pura vida spirit, the VIP Lounge Costa Rica at Juan Santamaría International Airport offers bright, welcoming interiors and comfortable spaces that encourage you to slow down, recharge, and carry a sense of balance into the journey ahead.
